Harvey Cohn, passed away in Rhinebeck, New York, on January 2, 2021 after a courageous battle with illness. The eldest son of Julian Lionel Cohn and Ruth Lemoine Cohn, Harvey was born on February 16, 1958 in New York City. He graduated from Red Hook High School, Class of 1975. He earned his undergraduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1979 and worked at architecture firms in Dallas and San Francisco before earning his graduate degree in architecture from the University of Michigan. He returned to New York to work at the architecture firm of Ehrenkrantz and Dattner, and then Dattner Associates. He made a lasting impression on colleagues for his careful work and attention to detail and for his congeniality and “gentlemanly” professionalism. In 1991, he established Harvey Cohn Architecture PLLC (formerly Harvey Cohn Architects). He married Sharon Neier in 1993, and they settled in Manhattan.
His warm presence will be missed by all who knew him.
When Harvey hung up his shingle, after long years experience with architectural firms around the country, he started business as principal of Harvey Cohn Architecture PLLC, creating comfortable, imaginative architecture with uncompromising attention to client service. Throughout the full range of architectural services including design, site planning, construction document preparation, and other construction-related services, consultations, and reports, he approached every project individually to meet clients's specific goals and priorities. Detailed holistic design process focused on developing great environments for living that fully met or exceeded clients' goals and aspirations. Wherever possible, he emphasized green architectural principles, passive or active, and was truly an early proponent of these techniques.
